Halloween Treat Tips for Seniors

With trick or treating upon us, it is a good time to look at some of the best goodies and treats you can hand out.

If you are over 60 you can expect to have many little ghosts and goblins at your door. That is because seniors have earned a reputation for handing out the best candies. In a study done by the National Confectioners Association, 84 per cent of those over 60 planned to give out candies. In addition, just 37 per cent have ever run out of treats.

Halloween Treat Tips:

  • While it is tempting to give trick or treaters something homemade, it is best to avoid it. Parents are likely to wonder and worry about whether these are safe enough for their kids to consume. Instead, stick with store-bought, packaged candies.
  • Ensure that the treats you are handing out will be age-appropriate. Smaller, hard candies are not good for younger children. Gummies and chocolates will be the best bet for every age group.
  • Be alert for allergies. Peanuts, tree nuts and other common food allergens are often present in candies. To be sure you are handing out something that will be safe for any child to enjoy, read the label and avoid those items with warnings about ingredients.
  • If you are concerned about handing out sugary treats you can still make it fun for kids. Instead of opting for raisins or apples select something children will enjoy like glow sticks or Halloween toys.

If you are looking to indulge this Halloween, here are some of the best treat options for grown-ups:

  • Dark chocolate –  This has lots of antioxidants and is much better for your body than milk chocolate.
  • Nuts – These goodies contain protein, which can be a fun and tasty way to treat yourself.
  • Coconut – Often plugged as a good source of fibre and a great way to aid digestion.
  • Peppermint – Research has shown this treat can help increase your mental alertness.
  • Ginger – An all-around good choice that has many health benefits. It has even been said to contain anti-inflammatory elements.

If you want a double treat this year pick any of the above covered in dark chocolate.

Happy Halloween!
